In her tenuous emotional state, being the mistress of Gawthorpe Hall is cold comfort. ![]() The story opens with Fleetwood blindly seeking refuge in the woods surrounding her stately home. It is her husband Richard’s dearest wish that his wife be safely delivered of an heir and, God-willing, a spare. Mistress Fleetwood Shuttleworth is pregnant for the fourth time: her previous three pregnancies ended in miscarriages. That and a young wife’s desperate wish to bring a healthy baby to term. There is great religious tension in England because “demonstrations of loyalty” to the Crown do not easily co-exist with the “old ways of faith.” That struggle is at the core of The Familiars. England is ruled by King James I, a Protestant monarch. ![]() The Familiars is set in Pendle Hill, Lancashire, a site famous for the witch trials of 1612. The characters were so intriguing and the politics absolutely fascinating, with a suspenseful mortar of mystery to hold it all together until the satisfying conclusion. I’d sit down with it and the next thing I knew a hundred pages had flown by. It’s been a while since I’ve had my hands on a book so utterly readable as this one. The Fixer was the first Jennifer Lynn Barnes book that I had ever read, but after reading it I knew that I needed to return to this author. Many of his books were adapted for the screen, often by the author himself, and the film of Jurassic Park (1993) – released three years after the novel – became the first movie to earn $1 billion at the box office. Crichton was also a successful writer for film and TV, notably as the creator of ER and Westworld. The novel established Crichton as a major figure in American genre fiction, particularly as the author of enormously popular techno-thrillers which draw on traditions of fantasy adventure fiction stretching back to Arthur Conan Doyle but update them with contemporary scientific and technological themes. There is such love in this book that at times it's a bit overwhelming. ![]() Overall, tho, this is just the book I wanted to read during the "pandemic" about which our media & politicos are trying to frighten us. There are some internal inconsistencies that need to be ignored (such as how come the rest of the world doesn't have a presence), and moments when the characters get a bit preachy. Starhawk gives a good overview of how the utopian society works, alternative healing, their consensus decision-making, their creed of the 4 sacred things (air, earth, fire, water) that all are committed to protecting.
